Providing Home-Delivered Meals in the Cairns Region

National-Meals-on-Wheels-Day-013-400Cairns Meals on Wheels is both an independent group begun in 1968 by local caring people; and part of a world-wide service.

Our purpose is to provide home delivered meals to frail aged persons, younger people with disabilities and their carers so that they may remain healthy and secure in their home, reducing the risk of premature or inappropriate institutionalisation.

The outcomes pursued by Cairns Meals on Wheels are that:

  • People who are frail aged or disabled can remain in their own homes;
  • The family or other primary carers are supported in their roles;
  • The service provided best meets the needs of clients;
  • The service operates in an effective, efficient and accountable manner.

Our funding comes from our clients' meal payments, government subsidies through Home and Community Care Program (HACC), private donations and other support such as grants and donations of goods or money by local businesses and community groups or clubs.
